Costa Rica covers an area of approximately 20,000 square miles. It is located on the southern tip of Central America, between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean, putting it in a privileged spot.

The temperature fluctuates between 20°C and 26°C degrees year round. The "green season" runs from May until November. Dry season, the equivalent of summer, starts in December and ends in April. The population of 4,000,000 is made up from the descendants from Spaniards who arrived in the early XVI century. There are two basic minority groups: one of Jamaican origin, and the other of the tribes of native Costa Ricans.

The Central upland plain of Costa Rica is ideal with its exceptional climate. Sheltered from northern winds by the high mountains, it receives the milder winds from the Pacific.

The official language is Spanish, though English is widely spoken. The official religion is Catholic. There are no particular requirements to enter the country; the passport is the only document you will need and it must be valid at least 6 months from the date of entry in Costa Rica.

There are 760 species of birds (more than the US and Canada combined), 900 species of plants, 1200 species of orchids, and 10% of the world's butterflies. This tiny nation has international standing in the conservation community for its commitment to the preservation of forest and wildlife.

The food in Costa Rica is tasty and simply seasoned. The most is made of local products: fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, and seafood. Vegetables are plentiful and varied, only to be surpassed by the selection of fruit. Typical dishes are: "Gallo Pinto", rice, beans, bell pepper, and onions, and "Casado", white rice, beans, small green salad, fried plantains, and beef, chicken or fish.

Crafts are available in wood, pottery, leather, coffee products, metal, and bamboo. The choice is wide and there is something for every budget.
