DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Ten days immersed in Costa Rica's most extraordinary natural landscapes

Every transfer is arranged, every guide is a specialist naturalist, and every key experience is already included. Nature is waiting.

1

Welcome to one of Earth’s most biodiverse countries.  Arrival in San José

A Costa Rica Top Tours representative greets you at Juan Santamaría Airport and transfers you to your hotel in San José. The afternoon is yours to rest, explore Barrio Escalante, or enjoy dinner at one of the city’s excellent restaurants. Tomorrow begins early with one of the most nature-rich days of the entire trip.  Tomorrow, Naturally Costa Rica begins in earnest.

2

A triple natural wonder.  Hacienda Doka, Poás Volcano & La Paz Waterfalls

An early departure into the spectacular Central Valley highlands. Begin at Hacienda Doka for breakfast and a guided coffee tour, covering the complete journey from cherry to cup using both traditional and modern techniques. Continue to Poás Volcano (2,708 m), one of the world’s most accessible active craters. Walk to the main viewpoint and gaze into the immense steaming crater with its turquoise acidic lake, then follow the trail to serene Botos Lagoon. In the afternoon, La Paz Waterfall Gardens delivers five thundering waterfalls, a hummingbird garden buzzing with dozens of species, a butterfly observatory, a serpentarium, and a world-class wildlife rescue centre. Return to San José in the evening.

3

Into the jungle by boat.  The magical journey to Tortuguero

An early morning departure east through Braulio Carrillo National Park, mist-covered mountains and primary rainforest lining the highway. Stop for breakfast at a local restaurant en route. At the dock, board a boat and navigate tropical canals (the only way in) to reach your remote jungle lodge. The journey itself is a wildlife experience. Arrive at Pachira Lodge for lunch, then explore the car-free village of Tortuguero, a small Caribbean community and one of the world’s most significant green sea turtle nesting sites.  Dinner at the lodge.

4

Lodge trails at dawn and an afternoon canal boat safari

Begin with a guided nature walk through the lodge’s jungle trails.  Your naturalist guide identifies the extraordinary flora and fauna of the Caribbean rainforest: poison dart frogs, tropical birds, and howler monkeys. The morning is yours at leisure before the afternoon’s guided boat tour through Tortuguero National Park’s canal network, a globally important sea turtle nesting habitat. River turtles on logs, caimans at the waterline, great green macaws overhead. Lunch and dinner at the lodge.

5

From Caribbean canals to the volcano.  Transfer to La Fortuna

After breakfast, return through the canals by boat to the mainland and head northwest toward La Fortuna de San Carlos, home of Arenal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the Americas. The drive crosses Caribbean lowlands, river valleys, and the Central Highland foothills. Stop for lunch en route. Arrive in the afternoon with the volcano rising dramatically against the skyline.

6

Above the canopy, beside the volcano.  Hanging bridges and hot springs

A full day in Arenal’s remarkable volcanic landscape. Begin with the Hanging Bridges tour.  Elevated suspension bridges through primary rainforest that put you at canopy level with toucans, morpho butterflies, and spider monkeys. In the afternoon, hike trails near the base of Arenal Volcano. As the sun sets, ease into the natural hot springs at The Springs Resort & Spa.  Geothermal pools in tropical gardens with the volcano towering above.

🌿 The Arenal region is one of the highlights of Naturally Costa Rica, with volcanic soils and high rainfall supporting one of the most species-rich environments in the country.

7

Ascending into the clouds.  Shared transfer to Monteverde

After breakfast, a shared transfer carries you up into the Tilarán Mountain Range to Monteverde. The air cools, the vegetation thickens, and by the time you arrive, the clouds have closed around you. Check in to Monteverde Country Lodge and spend the free afternoon exploring the town’s trails, restaurants, and craft shops.

☁️ Monteverde sits at 1,440 m within the permanent cloud zone that sustains an ecosystem found nowhere else on earth.

8

The cloud forest.  A guided walk through one of the world’s great natural wonders

A morning guided visit to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve.  Over 10,500 hectares of pristine cloud forest home to 400+ bird species, 100 mammal species, and 2,500+ plant species, including 420 types of orchid. Walk the trails with an expert naturalist: identifying bird calls, spotting glass frogs, and understanding the ecological relationships that have evolved over millions of years. The legendary resplendent quetzal is spotted here more reliably than almost anywhere else on Earth. The afternoon is free to explore at your own pace.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is privately managed by the Tropical Science Center.

☁️ The Monteverde Cloud Forest contains more plant species per hectare than virtually any temperate forest on Earth, and over 6% of all global bird species have been recorded within its boundaries.

9

One last cloud forest morning, then the descent back to San José

After a final Monteverde breakfast in the clouds, a shared transfer returns you to San José. The afternoon and evening are free.  Pick up locally crafted souvenirs and coffee, enjoy a leisurely last dinner in Barrio Escalante, or simply rest before your final departure.

10

Farewell, until the cloud forest mist calls you back

A final breakfast, then transfer to Juan Santamaría International Airport for your departure flight. You leave having experienced four of Costa Rica’s most remarkable ecosystems.  Volcanic highlands, Caribbean rainforest canals, the Arenal volcanic zone, and the mystical cloud forest of Monteverde. Naturally Costa Rica. Four ecosystems, ten extraordinary days. Pura vida.
